Working with The Climate Trust
We work directly with landowners to put your lands under a perpetual no-till conservation easement that protects your grassland soils forever. You can still graze your cattle and continue to run daily operations on your ranch as you normally would. In addition to providing upfront carbon financing, The Climate Trust handles all aspects of project development from land monitoring to the marketing and sales of carbon credits.
As the landowner, you then receive the ongoing carbon revenue from your project and the assurance that your land is protected from all future development or cropland conversion. This prevents centuries-old soil carbon from being released into the atmosphere through tilling or plowing—and protects your working ranch, wildlife habitat, water quality, and way of life.
Fifth-Generation Montana Family Ranch
In September 2024, The Climate Trust finalized its fifth and largest grassland conservation investment. The ranch is owned and operated by a fifth generation rancher who shared, “The Climate Trust is top-notch on explaining carbon markets. They are there to help you whether you’re a farmer or rancher or whoever. I worked closely with Kyler Sherry (Chief Operations Officer) and she’s great because she’s worked on ranches and has a true passion for family farms.”
Zumwalt Prairie Cooperative
With upfront funding from The Climate Trust, the Probert family-owners permanently protected their 12,225 acres of grasslands in Eastern Oregon while still running cattle. “Because of this conservation easement, Lightning Creek Ranch will always remain a working ranch while also protecting some of the most beautiful and ecologically important lands in the country,” shared Dan Probert.
Project Development Process
The Climate Trust works directly with landowners to determine their eligibility, record a conservation easement with their land trust, model GHG emissions, develop a project and conduct ongoing monitoring of the land, manage third-party verification, and conduct marketing and sales of resulting carbon credits.
Landowners are our shareholders.
As a nonprofit organization, we serve landowners first and foremost—honoring their good land stewardship and commitment to conserving their natural lands for generations to come. Since our founding in 1997, we have been working alongside landowners to implement climate solutions that conserve America’s lands and make carbon markets more accessible.
