Choosing the Right Forest Carbon Developer
You’re excited, I get it. After months of research and internal discussions, you’ve decided to move forward with an Improved Forest Management (IFM) carbon project on your forest. You’ve reached out to different carbon developers and conducted multiple feasibility studies. Now you’ve received multiple proposals for your project. Instead of comparing apples to apples, you’re now trying to compare a banana and an ear of corn. You thought this would be the easy part. It’s confusing, I get it.
Voluntary IFM carbon projects typically last for decades and the initial agreement with a developer can be 5, 10, 20 or even 40 years. Proposals will have varying degrees of credit loads and revenue forecasts. How do you know which one to choose? This decision will come down to your own due diligence. Some questions worth asking that may help you determine the best fit include: How long has this developer been in operation? Does the developer’s mission align with mine? Are there any references to share? Does the proposal make realistic projections? Do I feel comfortable?
Ultimately your decision will come down to trust. Entering into a long-term agreement with a developer can seem daunting, however with the right partner it should feel right. Here at The Climate Trust, we work with our partners to learn their forest management goals, short and long-term revenue needs and develop solid relationships that last. We are in it for the long haul, just like you. If you’re interested in exploring more on IFM, please reach out to our forestry team of experts here at The Climate Trust.
