ICVCM Approves ACR Reforestation Methodology with CCP Label

Published: July 22, 2025 by Allyah Keith, Project Associate

The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM)—the independent oversight body ensuring integrity in the voluntary carbon market through a focus on robust governance, verifiable emissions reductions, and alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals—has conditionally approved ACR’s Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation of Degraded Lands Methodology to receive the Core Carbon Principles (CCP) label.

The Climate Trust has two ACR reforestation projects currently under development which aim to restore forestland lost to wildfire. If you’re interested in developing a reforestation project, please contact our Director of Reforestation, Victoria Lockhart, for more information.

Forests are one of the most essential ecosystems on the planet, serving as critical carbon sinks and supporting biodiversity. However, deforestation, urban development, and natural disturbances continue to deplete forestland at an alarming rate. In response, reforestation efforts—which focus on replanting trees in previously forested or degraded areas—have gained significant attention for their role in restoring once forested areas and combating climate change. To date, projects using ACR’s methodology have generated approximately 7.8 million carbon credits [1]. ACR’s conditional approval applies specifically to methodology versions 1.0 through 1.2 and is limited to projects that prioritize natural forest restoration using native species, generate measurable co-benefits, and avoiding negative social or environmental impacts.

Projects awarded the CCP label are expected to enhance market confidence by signifying high-integrity carbon credits. The Council aims to complete assessments for all submitted methodologies that have issued credits by the end of the year, to maintain momentum and market trust, according to an ICVCM governing board member.
